Snap and I was brought up the son of Tv dealer. I use the walk in shop, I like that one approach, with in my budget, prices shoot up quickly above 50 inch

5 or 6 metres, but I thought the 4k tv's were supposed to be clear enough that distance wasn't too critical??
the problem is if you can see all of the tv at the same time in the focal range/point of your eye
(I'm no expert, that's just my understanding of it)
EDIT: I googled, at 5 or 6m away 65 inch is no problem :-) - the min. distances are much less than I thought, for 4k 65inch the min recommended was 12 feet (tho every web site seamed to quote different numbers)

Only if you have a 4k definition signal. If you are watching in SD it will look crap if you are close. HD won't be too bad but still depends how close you are.
There is little 4K available unless you are streaming new stuff or watching a UHD blu-ray (which you will need a UHD blu-ray player for)

I've had a 55" 4K LG for around 9 months. I don't have access to any 4K output but the HD picture is brilliant. I only have a small lounge but the 55" is just right for films - I watch a lot of films and have a 5.1 surround system that brings them to life.
Only bad thing is 'normal' TV picture is not particularly great ....and it's strange that even in HD if you get too close to the screen it's awful!!

I just bought a 58" Panasonic. Very nice, it replaced a Samsung that used to occasionally reboot and the HDMI interface ceased to work after 7 years. Samsung is now in the barn and will receive an aerial this morning if my neighbour comes around to foot the ladder and it stays dry long enough.
It was a PANA-TX58EX700B and 600 quid from Richer Sounds but I believe it has a bigger sister. It cost 20 quid extra for a 2 man timed delivery but you do get somebody to help you get it out of the box and check it for damage whereas Amazon just dumps it. John Lewis offer a similar service but every telly I wanted was out of stock. With Richer Sounds you get a 6 year guarantee FOC without any forms or hassle. Lewis offer 5. Most other stores charge you for extended warranties.
Although I liked the Samsung, I prefer the Panasonic. It has a lovely simple design and thin bezel and the smart TV interface is quite nice. Pictures good, maybe not as good as the OLED on black blacks but they tend to be 3 times the price. The difference in picture quality is not that noticeable especially if its for watching soaps

I work with projection systems, public display monitors and control room displays. 4K is great for getting a large desk top with lots of data onto a large monitor that lots of people need to see, think of 75" or 90" monitors in vertical format, in the average home 4K is (IMO) over kill:
1, At the moment there is not a lot of content in 4K
2, 4K screens should have high dynamic range colour which is wider than the colour pallet of HD and depending on where the screen places the HD colour pallet the image can look very flat and grey. Better screens process the colour pallet for black point and contrast correction which improves the image massively.
As a side point, one of the companies that I work for do a lot of 4K upgrades in pubs (I don't get involved in the pub work) using Sky Q boxes and a 4K HDMI matrix, often the pub will have a mix of 4K and HD displays. If the Sky Q box can see both 4K and HD it will default to HD consequently many people are going to pubs to watch the footie in 4K but are actually watching in HD and almost none of them will ever notice.
When they get cheaper and there is more content, I expect I will replace my current TV with a 4K HDR screen but I am not rushing out to do so.
