4G/5G instead of fttc "fibre" broadband

I seem to be having real issues with broadband at home, only fttc, with no promises of fibre in the next 3 years.

Was good but went to the dogs about 6 months ago.

Lost phone and internet for a month in October and now it's crap.. fast...slow.. disconnects/ hangs.

Openreach have been out and can't find a fault, replacement master socket improved speed but not reliability.

In the last week I have had speeds from 0.18 to 36mbps down, but with a consistent 6 up.

Most issues are between 17:30 and 18:30, but also at other less we'll defined times

Changed isp in December as sky were consistently unhelpful. But the same issues.

I suspect over subscribed llu, too high a contention rate or traffic management ... something I am supposedly paying to avoid.

I'm beginning to think the local exchange can't cope so am considering going 4G ... which has been consistently faster and more reliable or so it seems.

Anyone gone this way? Any suggestions as to how I may resolve the landline issues? .. I'm getting irritated by it now

You need someone to go point to point on it and do twist crimping. Is your line in overhead through trees? How far away is the cabinet. Getting a good o/r dude is like a lottery. Especially on intermittent stuff. As long as they can get a test result when they're there, they are off like a shot. "it's OK mate taraaah" is it more frequent when wet?

Could be anything from a dodgy crimp to a dodgy splitter in the dslam , bad connection somewhere

Yup but getting it dealt with is wearing me down ... I just want a broadband connection that's reliable ...

A quick check if you have an old school radio, is a walk along the line checking for REIN - https://kitz.co.uk/adsl/rein.htm

I had issues, and it turned out to be next doors power pole connections.
I have however since then moved to 4G, as it's quicker, due to the nearest cabinet being 2 miles away.

Well, the most common fault is house joins. IE that little box by a front door/window sill. And the box underneath your guttering. If you have them. Very rarely a socket. A newer socket is beneficial if you have extentions. Which if your having problems wants disabling straight away. 600m you should drop about 10mb give or take. More if there's any Ali in the mix. In hindsight they wouldn't of used it if they knew hi freq Internet was going down it.
A lot of newer guys just look at pictures of green ticks and don't monitor numbers and fluctuations. And the older guys won't teach them due to politics.

We are 4g only. 4g router with a proper aerial and a tplink deco system in the house. We have consistent speeds of about 35mbps download which is plenty for our needs. Thats with a mediocre signal strength.

We too are 4 g only, have an amplifier LTE dish type arial on our barn roof, then point to point down-to the house.50 to 60 down, 24 ish upload

Our Vodafone broadband is up, would you believe it crap internet.

I wouldn't trust that the 4g or 5g operators wouldn't do the same.

You could go star link, and voice over ip, and do away with land line and bt all together. 200meg down load round here but only about 18 up

We are about 1.1 miles to the nearest box, but our phone line doesnt come from there, but another hamlet/ exchange about 6500 yards away. The old bt guy who lives almost next door to the box explained some stuff to me in the pub one day. Hes retired now sadly. Apparently in the exchange they can reduce your speed slightly and tighten up the band making* it more reliable. Then from india or where ever, it gets picked up as a non normal condition, by computer checks, so they take off the restrictions, it speeds up, but becomes very unstable. You the customer then get all sorts of unreliability issues, till some one local puts the restrictions back on. Sadly I cant remember the proper technical terms, but it made sense to me at the time. Ours is now so bad we are now 4g as its barely ok to surf, but you cant stream.

Only issue with 4 g is every now and then updates cone out from the mast, your mobile updates automatically, the 4g broadband doesnt always, its happened twice in 3 years, where my it brother has had to fiddle with things on the network, basically updating firmware I think.
