evening all.

ive got hold of a couple of reconditioned plastic drums, i want to use them to fill me boat water tanks in the winter as all the taps where im moored freeze up.

as far as "reconditioned" goes ive no idea, but there bloody clean and dont smell of anything nasty.

but id like to swill them out with bleech, was going to put about a cup full to 45gal, and leave in over night and then rinse them out for the best part of a day.

your thoughts on the amount of bleech??? or is there something else i could use???

For god sake dont use bleach esp really strong stuff you'll never get rid of it,better option is Milton's sterilizing solution esp if your going to be drinking from it.

then I VEHEMENTLY ADVISE that you DO NOT use them for drinking water.

I would agree, Some chemicals get absorbed by Plastic and would easily contaminate any contact with water.

If your using it for Drinking water i would be inclined to use NEW containers or ones designed for drinking water.

Not matter how clean they look or appear, never put yourself or your family at risk.

New or used food standard only. I've all ways used Milton for cleaning drinking containers

We used to get some big ones which had been used for fruit juice concentrate, you could smell what had been in them and they were a sod to clean out. Pressure wash then Milton worked over time but it wasn't that critical for them not to smell a bit.

If used for drinking,use FOOD grade plastic only. As already said some nasty things you cannot smell or taste untill too late.

use home brew steraliser rarther than bleach

I'm with the majority here, you've no idea what's been in them so it's really not sensible to use them for drinking water.

An agricultrural supplier should be able to sell you some steriliser used for milking equipment that is more than suitable for such large capacity container.

if they was sold to you as reconditioned drums they should be sold as safe
might be best to ask the suppler of the drums if they are safe for drinking water or not

May mean reconditioned but for industrial use. Its not everyday people use 45gal plastic drums to fill up with drinking water?

I would definitely go for food grade use only, even new drums unless they've been manufactured for food use i wouldn't even use them even new ones.

there's issues with chemicals coming out of the plastic, Thats why i think boys don't start shaving now untill they are in their 20's, and you see them wearing pink jumbers and Baby blue cardies, Definately sex changing chemicials, so please be careful, i couldn't risk this on my family
