What voltage & current do they have handle?
I'd go along with DIN connectors then, Miniature D-Subs or XLR if you want something a bit more robust.
i would stay clear of the din plugs they are quite flimsy really i would go with the 4 pin xlr though they are quite robust and lock together which is good if they will be dragged aroung
another good choice would be the 4 pole speakon plugs but im not sure if they do a female version of the plug they do have a coupler to join leads together and will accept a decent thickness cable

You can afford RS prices?!
A bit late but second or third the XLR, four pole are used for DMX lighting control and are almost roadie proof so should be fine in a workshop.
DMX only uses 5 or 3 pin xlr 5 pin was the original standard but was altered and 3 pin is more common now
