3mm steel plate to 10mm+ casting

My wife has a cast iron pipe thing (in the garden, decorative). I want to weld a 3mm plate edge on to it.

I don't have anything cast I can play around with, so I’m looking for some background advice.

My thinking is to have the welding power/feed for the 3mm steel.

Advice very welcome.

Mig welding onto cast iron?
I would be wary of this one, cast iron is likely to crack as it cools.
If it is wifey's property you are likely to end up with a bill.
To do it properly is very complicated as far as I know.

Stainless rods would be my choice.

Can you post up a pic of this thing? If its a pipe, could you not hold the bird feeder bracket with a big jubilee clip? Position it so the buckle is at the back and away you go! Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Actually, drilled, pegged and JB Welded - was easy.

I'm just so keen on having a go welding anything I can get my hands on - helps my learning.
