3kw VFD controller

A mate has purchased a 3kw VFD controller to run a wood work machine, It has 2 1.5kw 3 phase motors that are 220v, Is it just me or are these controllers a pig to set up? The book has lots of info but not much about how to get going, He is trying to use single phase in and 3 phse out and we wired it as shown but not much happens.

Have you re-configured the motor wiring from star to delta?

Also, one drive may not like running two motors, you may need two 1.5kw drives.

I will take a look Thursday when i am with him but i am sure they were in star when we looked in the lids but we changed to delta and we only wired up one motor but it just made a high pitched noise.

They can be a bit finiky to get going alright. I bought a chinese one during the summer and it wasn't too bad, but an older one, an ABB, was a pain in the backside to set up.

I have to agree the ABB ones are an absolute pain, Siemens are brilliant but probably the best from a budget and ease of setup point of view are Invertek drives.

Was the motor fitted to a machine or on the bench? If the motor had a load attached the ramp up setting may need looking at.

It was on the machine but had no load on it as it only goes under load when you feed timber in.

From my meager experience I've found them fairly painless to set up and after inputting the motor specs. (Speed hertz) Setting a min and Max hertz and a ramp up/down and off they went.

Seimens Parker and a no name Amazon job
Haven't played with the 2 abb yet.

Once you’ve connected power up there are usually a couple of digital signals you need to wire in to enable it to function, normally a drive enable and possibly it may also require a reverse signal, though it depends on the model of the drive.

I’ve never used one of the Chinese ones, but if the documentation is anything like other cheap Chinese electronics I’ve bought then your going to be doing some head scratching trying to decipher it.

The booklet is in English but we are out of our depth lol, We have not connected anything up referring to a digital signal.

Ah ok, that will help then. Chinglish instructions are a nightmare, but at least you stand a chance now.

But looking at it the default setting is for start/stop from the panel without need for any other switches

It does list a fault

9.2 Other unexpected fault
1、Inverter is in normal condition but without any output
1. Internal fuse fail

Not sure if this is a possibility, not sure if it shows position of fuse

nothing wrong with abb.. just more versatile than most peoples needs

When got mine i had to change the frequency. It was set to 400 initially instead of 50

No nothing wrong, just a faff to get it up and running.
