316LSi for all SS applications?

Hello,

I would like to buy a single wire for all stainless applications (mainly 304L, but 308L and 316L as well). I know there's a table with best fits for each SS type, but boiling down to facts, would anything go wrong if I used 316LSi on all my SS welds?

It contains Mo, Ni, Cr, Mn so it wouldn't be lacking anything really compared to the SSs to be welded and I can't imagine it would decrease corrosion resistance so I don't see why not. I could use another wire type if it were a better single all purpose wire for welding SS pieces together but this one seems like it could be the most universally compatible (if I'm not missing something).

For what it's worth I asked the same question of the guy at Cheltenham Welding Supplies and he said 316 would he fine.

The project I bought it for (charcoal BBQ) is still half way down the list so don't have any first hand information!

316l is A4, and as far as i know 316l works with all steels and stainless.

But i'm no metalurgist.

Thank you for your replies. I'll check again in case any one who knows better than we do has anything to add, else I'll just go with the 326L.

Does any one know what would happen if I used the 326LSi for non stainless steels? (Mild or Carbon Steels?) Would that also work well?
