30m extension . willl i get amp drop ?

i dont have electricity in my garage so i have to run a 30m extension to it from my house ! will this be ok running a mig ? either 131en or 151en (havnt purchased yet)

my 130en turbo runs fine from a 30mm extension, havent welded long at its max power setting as only use the mig for thin stuff. That said: the little esab 150amp arc welder doesnt seem to get on too badly either..

I run a Sip 130 on a 65m extention lead (well 2 realy, 45m and a 25m) at full power so you shouldn't have a problem.

You will undoubtedly get some voltage drop across the cable but, from what others are saying, it sounds like you should get away with it. You could always make up a cable with heavier flex to reduce the voltage drop? Don't forget to uncoil the whole of the extension otherwise any left on the reel may overheat. Graham.

It will depend on the cable you use for the extension. I would want to see a minimum of 1.5mm. That will be around 8-10mm diameter for a three core.

Ideally, install a seperate feed to the garage, even if you do it with a free plug and socket, 2.5mm twin and earth will just go in if you are careful. Clip the cable to stop it flexing as T&E is not meant for that.

make a lead up using 2.5mm 3 core flex rather than.1.5mm dont use flat twin and earth as the earth wiire isnt sleeved and not suitable for wiring into plugs

Don't use twin and earth outside. It is not designed for it, the sun's rays and temperature changes break the insulation down pretty quickly. If you go to an electrical wholesaler you should be able to but flex, the black rubber type insulation is recommended for outdoor use.
In all honesty I would try your extension lead and see how you get on with a view to having an electrician run a properly designed supply in armoured cable. Don't forget it's now illegal for any one other than a "part p" compliant electrician to do domestic wiring. Particularly outside for obvious reasons.

I have about 30m of armoured cable running to my workshop consumer unit from the house. Can't remember the size of the conductor but it doesn't give me any problems.

Remember the heavier the cable - the lower the voltage drop, so find the heaviest lead you can for your extension.

thanks for the advice guys , i think i will have a go at my big extensions failing that i will have to take the car outside the house and do it on the drive !

designed to be abused when taking 110v the insulation is soft vynil

armoured cable to the workshop then rubber insulated 2.5mm to the welder
just waiting for the spark at work to drop off the cable tonight and wire up the rcd board in my shed-so been down the "whats the best way?"route pretty recently

Yellow for 110, blue for 240. No difference in the insulation though. Stu's right- 2.5mm Arctic will be good.
