is 3 phase more expensive than 240 single phase?

what i mean is like for like

say a 2hp compressor on 240v compared to the same but with a 415volt supply?

3-phase motors tend to be more efficient.

Now, just because it is 415V does not mean it is 3-phase. It may be a single-phase 415V motor.

3 phase motors are more efficient .cheaper to produce smaller in size .smoother running quality. there are 415v single phase motors available but are quite rare. they were mainly used on farms for milking machines and corn mills

Perhaps the question concerns the price of electricity, per Kilowatt-hour, on a 3-phase versus a single-phase supply ? I would expect that 3-phase customers have a much wider choice of tariffs than domestic users, and being heavier consumers, the price per KWH will be lower for them.

comercial energy prices are higher than domestic supply. they are negotiable over a period of a couple of years on a fixed price if u roughly know your demand

Don;t forget you will pay standing charges on all three meters as well

A kilowatt is a kilowatt whatever supply your're on. Three phase in domestic premises is the same price as single phase. I don't know where the three meters idea comes from my three phase supply has just one. The standing charge is for the supply not the meter.

shox doctor is right if you have three meters you pay a standing charge for each.
i have three meters but dont use three phase and was told by the electricity company get the unused meter de-energised and you wont pay the standing charge for it.
the standing charge is for the equipment to supply

Brightspark is spot on re- 3 phase v single phase motors, & older supplies had 3 meters as shox doctor & snooper says, I have 2 phase into my house as there is not 3 phase where I live,I had the meter removed a few years ago as I now only use one phase,the supply is still in to the board's fuses if I want another phase in the future.

what u will find is the older suplies had 3 single phase meters =3 phase. u pay standing charge for equipment not the supply. what can be done is get the meters changed for one 3 phase meter eg just the one .and the standing charge is quite significantly cheaper less equipment just the one meter to read

verry true there over stretched workwise due 2 minimum staff .+less equipment =less revenue the meters are suposed to be changed every 25 years if they have the time

3 phase is always considered to be a commercial supply and the tariffs are higher because industrial users power factor will be less than 1 . Simply put , power factor is the difference between power drawn as seen by the meter versus the real power drawn as a load on the supply. Power factor varies between 0-1 , 1 being considered normal. Anything less than 1 means the meter will read less than the actual power consumed so the tariff has to be higher to compensate. Power factors less than 1 are caused by non linear loads , ie , loads other than pure resistance.
