Does the x1 function need to be set to 3

I agree - set F2.13 to 3

Set F0.02 to 1.

I've just tried F2-13 and 3 nothing happened I've been looking through the other settings (not changing any) but still had no luck

Thank you I've just tried F0-02 to 1 and YAY my external on/off switch now works thank you.
Just the pot to workout now if everyone is still able to guide me through it please would be greatly appreciated

With the pot usually the two outer legs connect to gnd and 10v and the centre leg will connect to the AI connector. Pot should be 10K

And possibly F0.03 set to 3

Could you post how to set the parameters? Might help someone else.

Also, consider setting up an SPDT switch (1-0-2) so you can have forward/reverse in the same switch. Very handy for power tapping threads, then backing out.
