2nd workbench space saving bench grinder ideas?

This is the beginnings of my second workbench. I already have a small workbench in my back cluttered 2 car garage.

I have a single garage inside the front of my house and it will be handy to have a second small workbench in there for say an alternator rebuild or similar which I would otherwise have to drag around to the back garage.

I got a 2.5mm mild steel plate folded up to suit and bolted in my recently acquired 1968 Record No 2 vice.



I started with some typical wall storage magnets and racks.

I do have another 200mm Bench Grinder coming for this front garage also should be here tomorrow. A Sealey 600W unit. I use a Wire wheel alot for odd jobs like brake jobs etc which I do tend to do around this area of my drive so again it's a convenience thing.

Trouble is, there won't be much of any workbench left if I bolt a 200mm grinder down too.

Any space saving ideas please? I was thinking of maybe having a 5mm plate folded up and using the vice to hold the bench grinder when in use as one option.

This single garage is very tight. A car needs to be in there at all times so no room for a floor stand either.

Pit it on a wooden or steel base & use a quick clamp to hold the base in place.

Mount it on some 50mm sq. hardwood then clamp that in the vice when you need it, works a treat.

I like the folding idea.

I could have some mold steel folded and weld in some hinges to make that work. And maybe back it with foam straps to prevent excess vibration and a chain to fold it in under and hook out of way.

There is a spare Mercedes S500 transmission below the bench which is a minor detail.

I have been working on wall mounted swing out/away vices, grinders and other general oddsnsodds that are not in constant use in the mancave/toyshed extension.

Yep, definitely on a fixture to be bolted in the vice. That's how I do it with my wire wheel bench grinder.

Given you have a nice flat front face to the bench, drill and tap it at regular spacings all the way along for multipurpose use? Grinder on a plate with a 90 bend, M8 thumb turn screws to anchor into front face of bench. I Didn't explain that well but a bit like the ryobi pic you posted. You can then create more projects designing and building various other uses for the fixing points!

Yep, definitely on a fixture to be bolted in the vice. That's how I do it with my wire wheel bench grinder.

My bench shear sits on a few bits of 2x2" heavy angle welded in an H that get clamped in the bench vice in use, gets stashed under a bench when not, works for me too.

My wire wheel grinder is fitted two pieces of large angle that are tacked back to back in a T shape. The leg of the t is then held in the bench vice, works well.

That is what I did for many years with my grinder. Now I just use a Black and Decker workmate to hold the grinder

My good used Sealey 600w 200mm bench grinder arrived in post today. RM bent one guard unfortunately but didn't matter in reality as I remove the right guard anyway for wire wheel installation.



It is quite a large grinder so I will go with the folded steel plate and hinge idea. So I can flip it under the table out of the way when not in use. It's too big to put into the bench vice. Besides that if it broke loose from the vice whilst using the wire wheel could have dire consequences

It'll be a week or two until I get the plate but I will report back on how it works out.

Ive got quite a few bits of kit now with the same system on them handy for bits you dont use that often
