2K THINNERS AND CELLY

I have run out of celly thinners. Will 2k thinners do for thinning some celly basecoat. It cleaned my gun out fine. It is a small job, not a car.

celly base coat ? is there such a thing ? are you sure its not polyester

It was old paint I had for a black Nissan Patrol and I asked for celly. I think the car 1995 was celly with 2k lac on top. The 2k thinner is UPOL.
I gave this little tank of new metal a few coats of etch/filler primer and then this celly black paint. I was going to give it more black celly but looking tonight it is quite deep and well covered.
My plan is to finish it in clear Omicron 2k clear which I have. Will I have to key the black celly first? with 800grit?

if its gloss celly I would wait and make sure its cured properly or it will probably crack as the 2 paints dry at different rates, I wouldn't expect celly to be used on a 1995 car, if it is proper base coat smell it, to see what you have

edit infact celly would not have been used

flat it with 1000 grit if it shows any signs of not being cured don't try it, youll regret it

yes chances are the 2k thinners will work for a small non important job , sometimes makes metalics go a bit like hammerite if its not compatible

as a rule you dont sand metalic bascoat as it will ruin the effect

I gave it another few coats of this celly? it smells like pineapple chunk sweets. I did not sand it . Because although matt finish and dry, I did not think it would be cured from last night in temps of 2deg. I just warmed the paint and it sprayed fine.....hopefully I have a chemical etch between coats. I will bring indoors when it stops smelling and let it cure for a few days.

base coat doesnt really need to cure , as long as its flashed over and gone dull you can clear coat it

Basecoat flashes off in a few minutes, if you leave it outside the overcoating window you will have to rekey, usually you would lacquer almost straightaway

your thread is confusing, you mention base coat and celly in the same thread ive never seen any celly base coat in 30 years, does the paint have a gloss to it once dried ? you will only get the correct info once you have determined exactly what paint you have, as langy mentioned base coat only has a limited window for you to lacquer where as celly needs to be fully cured

I had the paint marked as celly. I was sure I bought it as Matt black celly, in a blank tin . It does flash off dull matt in ten minutes (cold weather)
I just assumed base coat as it was matt black. I had used the matt black under the metallic on the Patrol, then clear coat.

If I scratch it with the grey pad, will the lacquer cover ok?
Or scratch and flatcoat again and then lacquer within the hour?

All done guys. Thanks to all. My painting is so bad as it will be another 2yrs before I paint again.........so I forget mostly anything I have done. I scratched it and gave it another base coat. Went over that with the 2k clear. The finish is fine for my purpose.
I think the black basecoat may have been Acrylic all along. I may have mistakenly marked it as celly.

Only need it to be rustproof and resistant to a slight drop of petrol splash.

i assume you have checked it for leaks

extensively! I used 2mm steel sheet so I could get some heat and power with the Mig. The only bits that leaked with the airline pressure and soapy bubbles were the spigots. I went over them again. Cold welding process( mig) is not the best for this eh?
You would have had a laugh at me bending the sheet into a cylinder with no heat or machinery
