I'm sorry that doesn't make sense to me.

I can and do easily go all the way through glaze, clear, paint, and primer, right back to bare surface, with whatever grit I choose. I am using firm blocks btw.

sounds like your not sanding the primer enough to get a flat surface. And always use a guide coat to achieve this.

Just to give you a time reference .. it takes me about 45mins plus to sand primer flat on a bonnet, with 800 grit.

How long does your primer take to flash off?

As previously said it could be putting the primer on too thick and getting small pinpricks holes, this could be made worse with too fine a paper just polishing the finish and not cutting back the primer.
