Hi Rob and welcome to the forum,Is portability an issue? or will it be workshop based?
I have a thermal arc 180amp,nice enough machine but there are better machines out there,Lorch are upper end of your budget but are very nice machines, but portamig/oxford would give you good results at the lower end of the budget ,murex etc fall in the middle...With your experience maybe the multi-process machines would be of interest, portable migs with arc and tig, although more to go wrong
What work are you taking on at home car? light or heavy fabrication?,with the right power supply portamig go to 405+amps on 240v
its more for light to medium work .i do a fair bit of ally on tig at home but could do with a good mig just to speed up the bigger amounts of welding.i like the sound of the lorch252 if anyone has exp of them would be gratefull.
I almost suggested the Lorch 252 as a bit of fun thinking you were the typical first-time buyer who wanted an all-singing-all-dancing machine for about £200 all in!
As said, speak to Matt, I'm sure he can point you in the direction of one to suit your budget.
