240V lathe

can anyone reccomend a small 230V single phase lathe. around 400mm between centres if poss. and automatic feed for square threads too just interested in seeing whats available atm so i can get an idea of pricing

Assume you mean ACME threads?
Realistically that only leaves a few English machines a lot larger and 3ph. Unless you happen to drop lucky choosing a machine that can do what you require, not all can.

yeah, ive fallen into the habit of calling acme threads square from work. the toolmaker in work has a small 240V that has had chester logos painted on it, that will cut acme threads, but it only has a collet holding system, and no option for a chuck, and it has been there so long noone can trace it and i cant find a chester that matches it. i dont necessarily need acme threads, just metric thread pitches really, im not going to be making anything under too much strain, just like the look of the acme thread lol

What you have to bare in mind is every different pitch of thread will require at best a partial strip down and rearrangement of the change wheels. Some chinese machines this could take you all day.
I would also check all the pitches the machine can do, there could well (quite probable) there will be a few common pitches it cant do. There has been uproar over this.

This is the main reason i went for an English machine from the 600 Group, just dial the pitch in with max of 4 knobs/levers to select inc metric or imperial, job done.

i have found a chester db7vs, which is the right size, a reasonable price, and will do pitches from.5 - 3mm, which is more than what i'll need, and runs the same speeds as the one i use in work. the gearbox is an easy to change setup, using 6 gears, and there is a guide on the side panel to show what gears go in each slot for different pitches, very similar to the one in work, so im thinking about that one. and it shouldnt take me long to save the money either

and if all else fails with the pitches, i'll use a die and a free sliding holder in the tailstock



EDIT: and it does most common TPI too

Looking at the manual now.

You wont like the tail stock lock up.

the one we use in work is a db8vs, which is just a slight bit bigger (400mm between centres) and that doesnt have a tailstock lock

There dont look like any missing common pitches in metric but quite a few in imperial.

judging from the drawing given, it looks like the tailstock can be locked uding one of the fixing screws? i shall try in work tomorrow to see if this is true

Spanner jobby.
Can pose problems when top slide is down the side plus p you off having to keep picking up the spanner.

That company know how to charge for spares so beware, £244 for a smaller size motor.

thought so. i may fab up a socket on a stick type job if it gets that annoying. and i can get spares through work alot cheaper. not branded but still same. specs and fittings. i mainly want it for making custom bits for R/C cars, as i have an original tamiya lunchbox, and also to fix things or make new levers and stuff for my bikes, so it should be quite handy being so small and light
