240V 1 ph to 240V 3ph inverters, general info wanted.

I've found a Mitsubishi FR -E520S-0.75K-EC. I think it came out of an industrial washing machine. Is it worth investigating further, there's no speed controller and it doesn't look like there could be one. Might be useful on a pillar drill or grinder, but are there lathes and the like using so small 3ph motors.

Have you got a picture, it sounds like an inverter drive from the part number. Would be worth a google to see what that throws up.

I've a reasonable grasp of electrics, but inverters are not something I've really dealt with much. I've one on my pillar drill but that was wired in by a proper electrical engineer, letters after his name etc.

There’s really no mystery to them, unless you start delving into the inner workings.

If you want to use that for a drill or whatever I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work providing you had a suitable motor attached. In the manual you’ll see lots of different parameters which can be configured, but for most applications the majority can be ignored or left as default.

If you decide to use it then pop up some pictures or a description of what you want to do, it’s all fairly straightforward.

Has it got the programming panel on it? The FR-PA02-02

If not, can you easily source one for sensible money?

A lot of VFDs have removable programming panels. These are often not present on machines which have been set up by the machine builder so that the end-user cannot mess with the programming. In some cases, there is also a password so that even a fairly determined end-user cannot just fit a programming panel and mess with the programming. On a quick glance through the manual, the FR-E500-EC does not seem to have a password setting, so you should be able to reprogram it to suit your process/machine so long as you have a programming panel.

The 0.75k seems to be a 750W, 1HP, drive, so should be fine for quite a few small lathes and many pillar drills.

It is certainly worth reading through the manual and working out the necessary settings before you pull the trigger. Personally, I would not not buy any used VFD without having the control panel and knowing its history. Even then, it would need to be really cheap.
