22mm or 14mm Grinding discs?

Naive question alert: A few months ago I worked at a firm where they used two different types of grinders - one set used 22mm diameter discs and the other set used 14mm diameter discs but didn’t seem to be interchangeable.

Can I ask why is this so? Is this standard to have two different grinders or is there an adapter / spacer of some sort that could be used?

Are you talking about angle grinders?
If you are then the older 4" ones had a 16mm bore in the disc.
4 1/2" and up usually have a 22mm bore.

Pretty much the same cost. Can get a 4 1/2" grinder and then just get the flange and nut for a 4" grinder and run 4" disks on it anyways

I would actually think the 115mm (4 1/2") discs would be cheaper as they are much more common nowadays. I think it will be increasingly harder as time goes on to find 4" discs, they certainly are a lot harder to find now than 115mm ones are or at least that is my experience. At one time it was all 4" angle grinders, now it is 115mm and increasingly 125mm.

I find the 4" easy enough to get - maybe its just our supplier being old school?

Never had an issue fitting them over the thread myself - only issue was fitting the flange over the thread but a lathe sorts that out

They are certainly rarer up this way and for good reason I suppose, no one has 4" grinders any more. There is no reason to buy them as opposed to 115 discs unless you have an old 4" grinder or are getting them a heck of a lot cheaper than 115mm discs.

It was the flange I was meaning.

I think the only reason to use a 4 inch grinder over a 41/2 is access.
"Some" 4 inch grinders are physical smaller which can help in getting into tight spots.

I'm looking for a nice (physically small) 4 inch for the odd time I can't get a bigger grinder in.

I use an air die grinder, 2 inch air grinder, 3 inch air cutoff saw (as a grinder) 41/2 inch, 6 inch and 9 inch.
They all have their place but I usually start with the biggest grinder I can get in (and control).

The 3 inch cut off saw is surprisingly good at dressing mig welds on car bodywork, not so good on structural steel.

Whilst some 4.1/2" grinders are one handed, a lot are meant for two handed operation like the 5" and bigger. You can still buy 4" angle grinders, I used to have a job where we spent hours every day using a 4" version fitted with sanding discs, the 4.1/2 ones would have been harder work.

I will not buy a 115mm grinder unless it is a single handed type, the ones with the handles and triggers like the bigger grinders are just a waste of time as far as I am concerned. That is just my own personal thoughts, I am sure others think the opposite.

Don't mind a handle but needs a latching switch on a 4-4 1/2 grinder
