I worked for Group4, pay (in '85) was £1.72 an hour static or £2.12 cash-in-transit. I used to have this theory that if I was in the back of a cash van and someone hijacked the guy outside, threatening to blow his head off, I'd say "Go ahead, and you won't get the cash. Or don't, but you still won't get the cash"

We used to have a large percentage of ex-squaddies; they always felt the need to go around sites tooled-up and some of them got into right rucks. I never carried anything; never had any bother. On one site over at Coundon in Co. Durham (it was a British Steel refractory works that had closed and was being dismantled) the over-riding rule, believe it or not, was not to stop the gyppos thieving scrap but to stop night fishermen poaching along the riverbank. Sometimes I'd bump into 6 or 8 burly murderers in camo clothing with fishing gear, at 2 AM, and I'd say 'I haven't seen you, and you haven't seen me' and there was never any aggro
