205 steel rods

Morning all,
just a quick question I have been given some steel rods to try with the code 205 stamped on them. I tried them for tigging mild steel and they produced a much better weld with no blow holes. (I have previously been using gas rods)
Are the 205 rods the tripple deoxidised ones? I've dont a search and cant find any info on these.

You don't use gas rods for tig welding, they are for gas welding, tig rods for tig welding, A15 is about the norm.

Yes I found that out the hard way!
What does the 205 mean though? The chap who gave me them to try is going to order me a box for a favour (repair work I do for him) so I wanted t make sure they are the correct type.
They a a million times better than the gas rods, I'm able to get really nice welds with them. His fabrication company uses them but I'm not sure for what and asking the the welder questions who uses them in not easy as his English is not as good as his welding.

The only 205 i can think of is the Royal 205 but i think thats a brazing rod if i remember right.

Ive just let the wife have a look and she thinks I had it backwards and it says "SD3" ??? Does that mean anything?

SD3 doesn't mean anything either, to me at least. Google links it to a brand name for ER70s-G... http://www.wecs-ltd.co.uk
The usual suspect for TIG as said is A15/ER70s-2, i've seen them stamped as W2Ti which makes more sense if look at the BSEN specs like this which lists several flavours... http://www.westbrookwelding.co.uk/tig/mildsteeltig.html

SD3 is probably sub arc wire

But it can be used with TIG...........it has around 1.5Mn and 0.25Si which is lower than the the Mn/Si content of S-6 but similar to S-2 or the Euro W2Ti (which are the modern equivalent to A15)
To be honest Sub Arc wire is usually 2.4mm or bigger

ER70S-6 (usually MIG wire) will give better results

Oerlikon were the company that pushed sub arc wire use for TIG welding. SD3 is their name

Reminds me of when I was lodging at a mates many moons ago. A girlfriend had bought me a load of Aramis 900 products, one been soap.

So anyways I came home one night to be greeted by the dog: freshly bathed and smelling of my Aramis 900. Before I could ask the question his mother (not the dogs) who was a total air head, proclaimed "Have you seen foo foo (or whatever the damn thing was called) Doesn't he smell nice"

"Yes" I said "what did you bath him in"

"The DOG soap in the bathroom"

It was then the penny dropped she'd only read it upside down
