2009 ish ford transit issues ?

Eldest is mithering about a transit camper conversion thing as shes about to come back from shearing in Oz and then she’ll be off lambing and shearing around the country (yes I am extremely proud of her ).

Shes looking at a 2009 ish transit for some reason and has seen one locally . Apart from the brown stuff underneath (which bits rust the worst ? ) do they have any other issues such as common engine problems blah blah blah ? Cheers

My 2008 one used to eat an alternator every few years, if that's any help. Other than that I don't remember anything catastrophic or recurrent.

Ignore my deep hatred of Ford transits.

Things that have gone wrong with my 08 rwd: egr valve failed multiple times, single leaf rear suspensions snapped, power steering return line fails where it is clipped to the body, injector seals leaking, thermostat housing fails, then all the normal stuff like ball joints blah blah blah.

If I was buying a new one, I would immediately get the egr deleted. Beyond corrosion all the rest is pretty easily fixable.

Can't remember the difference between mk6 and mk7 but probably can add starters and discs/wheel bearing fun to that.
Lets not forget the cam issues...i hate every transit after the smiley

@mattg did you fit genuine or aftermarket EGR valves? I never had to replace a genuine Ford replacement EGR valve under warranty, but aftermarket ones were lucky to see out warranty. Ford superseded them a few times, and the later ones were far more reliable, but the aftermarket ones seemed to retain the original reliability.

First aftermarket then genuine then 'fixed' permanently. Egr delete costs less than a poor quality aftermarket replacement.

other than rust start it from cold and see what it sounds like

pop oil filler cap off and see how much blow back there is

which model is it?

100T280 means 100hp 2.8ton
110T350 meand 110hp 3.5ton

if it's camper sized good chance it'll be a 3.5ton van?

you want 110hp or higher - they all have the 6 speed gearbox, which is a must

the thing you have to remember at the moment is vans are fetching high prices for them

just get a decent VW.......not cheap but the plus side is u'll always get most of yer money back...

sprinters are a LOT better if you're doing a lot of miles, transit's tend to eat engines :-(

I tend to do mainly plant and trucks but I have “inherited” a few light trucks from plant customers. They tend to be transits.

I look after 3 Mk7. All RWD. All T350.

2 are at one place and get abused by seasonal workers.

I pretty much do the routine stuff and check them over before the summer and about every 6-8 weeks through the season, then a proper inspection before MOT time.

I don’t usually need to do much apart from breakages through the year. It tends to be a bit of welding and a few hundred pounds of parts at MOT. They seem to like to eat anti roll bar bushings, drop links and the odd ball joint. They are driven by mongols and overloaded so that may be a factor.

The other one is an owner-driver and it fares much better.

I’ve done wheel bearings on all the rears (I think) and a couple of the fronts. A lot of the faults I find are because I’ve only been looking after them for about 18 months and they were not really maintained before that.

Once I’ve got all the bits done, they seem to last and be pretty bombproof. Especially if it’s an owner driver, like your daughter will be.

I’d give it a bloody good going over, change out everything that’s suspect as far as your budget allows and hope for the best.

Biggest problem I've seen with them other than the rot is how easy they are to steal.

merc sprinter NOT a rust bucket?? I've yet to see a sprinter older than 10 years not rotten!
plus if you know where to look vws aren't great either!
lets not forget to the masses these vehicles are workhorses and are neglected as such so little wonder they suffer
but good ones are out there, just need to do your research so you know what to look for and check them thoroughly
