20 amp delay fuse fitting

I need to know from the professionals that may also be sparks where, how, and what a 20 amp time delay fuse is for a wylex consumer board is.

I need to wire my spot welder into the mains board, it says it requires a 20 amp time delay fues and i am uncertain as to what this is or even if this exists for my consumer board.

I think that you are looking for what used to be called a 'slow blow' in fuse terms. You need a motor rated mcb. Start up is where the standard mcb tends to trip. It's not really the amps that's the important rating in this respect, it is as you point out, the speed. I had to order mine as even the local sparks supplier didn't keep them in. I think it was either a C or D rating. But motor rated was the phrase they used. Not going to give any lectures on electrical safety blah blah. I presume that as you are asking, you are not a competent electrician yourself. But it's an easy job to put in the mcb. BUT it's not a case of swapping one from the ring main. It needs to be added to the board. You don't want your kettle, telly and toaster running on a slow blow.

Hi Furry. I have in fact had to add fuses to my wylex board for circuits like a shower unit, so I am in that sense intimate with my board, and wiring in new circuits. I have and am able to lay in new 32 amp cables to a 32 amp rated connector as you get from screwfix to plug the beast into, my problem is in what the fuse looks like, where to get it from and where to place it on the board, or indeed off the board on a seperate inline fuse holder if needed.

I suggest that you go to your local electrical factors in that case and say 'Can I have Wylex 20 amp motor rated mcb, then.

Sorry if I misunderstood the question. But that's all I did. I think mine IS Wylex from memory. They sorted me out in a jiffy. Looking on the web wasn't as helpful as actually talking to a bloke in a shop. I had spare slots so it went in there as the DB is next to my bench in the garage. If you need a satellite DB then obviously you'd have to wire that in too.

Hello Xan,

if it is a rewirable fuse rather than a cartridge fuse, I think your local factor will struggle to find a suitable element. If it is an mcb board then that is relatively easy, a c rated mcb should be adequate. When you look at an mcb you will see on most domestic consumer unit's mcbs marked b6, b16 etc, these are b rated, you want a c20.
