its converted to gas welding and this is the first time i have welded with gas, the thing is i can hear gas coming from the nozzle all the time, not just when im welding, is this correct?

the second question is every time the wire stops feeding for any reason but main because its stuck to the tip the wire bends and snaps directly after the wheel that turns the wire, is this normal as its proving a big waste of wire?

Did you change the polarity?

Sounds like the gas valve in the torch is bad.

Sounds like your tension is too high, it should slip if the wire is stuck. Sticking to the tip is usually too low a wire speed or torch too close to the work.

Sounds like you've got the tensioner wound down too tightly, like Shenion says, a burnback should make the rollers slip on the wire. To set correctly, back the tension off the rollers and grip the bit of wire sticking out of the tip tightly between your thumb and forefinger. Press the trigger and wind the tensioner down til the wire just starts to push through your grip then back it off a touch til the rollers just start to slip.

hi busdenis,

I had the same problem as you, gas leaking from the torch. All I did was undo the 4 screws in the torch, remove the cover and then exercised the plunger, which operates the gas valve. I had the gas turned on, with the welder was unplugged from the mains, to enable me to hear whether I had fixed it. The brass plunger that operates the gas valve had become crudded up. A quick clean and I was away!
