Currently having to patch up the wifes horsebox, although have done a number of landrover Chassis never had to patch a lorry before any recommends of thickness of plate to use
I know it sounds obvious but the same thickness that is on there. is there anywhere with a purposely placed hole that you can get a vernier in to measure it?
Is the DAF chassis tensile & problematic welding?, seem to remember notices on some chassis regarding any welding to structure could cause stress fracture's
The steel itself welds lovely with arc,but it is a special tensile steel, its springy, this is why spring hangers and such are bolted/riveted on instead of welded.Depends where youre welding it and if you can hide the patches,as Im not sure whats allowed at test time cus Ive never welded the chassis on any of my trucks(yes they do crack in stress places)
The Chassis is a spring steel, the best way to repair it is to arc weld the crack with Low Hydrogen rods and then fit a "C"section (if possible, but a flat plate with angled ends will do, ie not a square plate) flitch inside the chassis and bolt through any existing chassis holes. A old bit of chassis from a scrap yard would be best.
