Just thought I'd introduce myself, I've been browsing the MIG welding guides and forum to learn how to weld to a reasonable standard in order to start a car restoration project. The car in question is a 1983 mk1 Golf Gti. Link to project under way :- http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=93749
I've been practice welding for about a month now on scraps of 1mm sheet metal and think I can start on the car but wanted to run a few pics past you guys to check if I'm doing anything wrong.
I'm borrowing a Clarke 100e from my dad at the mo but have a Portamig 185 on order which should arrive soon I hope (been over 3 weeks now).
Using an Argon Shield equivalent gas with 0.6mm wire & metal is mild steel 1mm.
Butt welds :
I think I rushed this as the weld was high & thin with low penetration.
Second attempt going a bit slower :
Penetration looks better, is this ok? The weld is squashed becuase I'm using an aluminium heatsink behind the weld.
Finally my plug welds:
Is the penetration ok?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Rich
