I had to go and pick up a load of (old) Girl Guides from camp, first things first!Need a photo anyway
It came with this body when new, a gantry crane or breakdown crane, but owing to restricted access to my rear garden and shed (width and height) I will go for a flatbed, like the picture above right, I would have to erect the canvas tilt after driving it out of the garden, I will remove the winch and winch gear so the body can be mounted a lot lower,Good find there @Matchless. You have a blank canvas for the rear body. Any thoughts on it?
There's your problem.according to wiki,
yes. I know. you NEVER trust wikiThere's your problem.
Austin produced the K6 from 1942 to 1945.
Had that been a Portee with that gantry?
The RSJ gantry slides forwards for transport (or to remove it's own engine) and backwards to be used presumably with a hoist attached to a roller trolley for lifting and loading mainly ammunition boxes or maybe fuel drums, the RAF were a big user of these trucks, mine still has the 5 ton PTO driven winch and roller system to run the cable out under the body but I will remove and store that lot so I can mount a body much lower, I am restricked to driving it through a 7foot by 7foot opening to get to my shed (to stop me buying big things) ...................... I still have all the gear shown in the diagram, all two tons of it!There's your problem.

One thing I would like comments on is my plan to switch around the high / low gearbox that is also a pto for the winch, looks like a transfer case but these trucks are only four wheel drive, all at the rear, that extra gearbox is either direct, 38 mph top speed or a reduction ratio giving maybe 15-20 mph but a lot of pulling power, I plan to remove that box and turn it around so it is either direct, 38 mph or high ratio, maybe 45-50 mph. it will never run loaded or seriously off road and a higher road speed will be a lot more practical for trips to Normandy or other shows with my motorcycles on the back! basically unladen so the brakes will be fine, I think the main risk is cooking the diffs but maybe a diff cooler or just extra oil capacity should sort that issue if it is in fact an issue! I intend to stick with the 4 litre petrol engine.........

6' 11 3/4" with 10.5 x 20 tyres, I am probably going down to 7.5 x 20 bar grip tyres and may remove a few leaves from the springs as it will never run fully laden in the future, especially if I remove 2 tons of winch gear....... MGA is in the assembly stage as I plan on driving it to an event in a week and a half! won't have bootlid, bonnet, lights, etc, but it is only 1/2 a mile and on the same road!@Matchless I've thoroughly enjoyed your MGA thread so am looking forward to this one with some excitement.
7' x 7' though, is that cab not already more than 7' tall![]()
A steam calliope.....Good find there @Matchless. You have a blank canvas for the rear body. Any thoughts on it?
If you lighten it by 2 tons, expect the cab height to get taller!6' 11 3/4" with 10.5 x 20 tyres, I am probably going down to 7.5 x 20 bar grip tyres and may remove a few leaves from the springs as it will never run fully laden in the future, especially if I remove 2 tons of winch gear....... I don't think those springs will move much!If you lighten it by 2 tons, expect the cab height to get taller!
