1800cc from *two* cylinders?!

There was one of those in my mates garage for MOT yesterday. Quite a trick looking beast, with a short titanium open 'silencer' on it. When it was fired up and left idling for a minute I put my hand over the exhaust, there was hardly anything coming out, and a sort of strangled mechanical rustling sound, whereas I expected a decent flow of hot air.

Apparently there is a huge cat slung underneath, which probably stifles several dozen potential horsepower. I'll bet a lot of those are quickly removed by speed freaks who feel they really need the full 220hp available....

Me either look really cool. But would they not become opaque with spraying oil while running? Like to see a video of it running.


€8 for 5 litres! Used to buy huge 5 and 10l boxes of wine in French supermarkets on caravan holidays when you could bring back as much wine as you liked for personal consumption. Haven't been since 2019, guess brexit will have put a stop to that.

You might know my mate - Stuart Shaw? He used to get pretty much every Friday off when we were on course to be up at the circuit for racing! Used to be sponsored by Baxi boilers…here he is on the right with Dean and the very Ducati!

I don’t think he ever raced - not to the level that Dean raced at anyway, I only knew him from when we were on course together so probably about 12-18 months and then we went our separate ways, never saw him again. The time I knew him he was spannering for Dean and didn’t race/ride himself. I think he knew him from growing up together. Stuart was a Hull lad.

On the topic of another current thread he was actually a submariner!

I fitted a straight through exhaust on an S1000r (the sit up variant of the S1000rr).

You basically chopped off the exhaust after the headers and fit an open exhaust.

It was horrifically loud, 2 mile roadtest was bad enough for me!.

They do a double fire on overrun, sounds like a shotgun going off..

Can't remember if the S1000rr has an exhaust butterfly valve, most sports bikes do, they are programmed to close at certain rpms, purely to get through Euro noise emissions.

Normally at full chat they are wide open, low load and idle shut to quieten the exhaust.

Any litre sports bike is too fast to wring it's neck on the road, traction control or not.

Yeah that photos a bit later than the Bricknell days, this was in the early eighties before and when he'd just started out racing. Used to watch him at Carnaby on a GSX1100 fighting it around the track. He was still an apprentice at aerospace (Brough) then.

I’d guess ‘96 -‘97as that was when me and Stu were on course together - he went back to Yamaha (R7) after the Ducati

We all had Elsie's at the time, iirc dean had a 350 powervalve nose cone and belly pan type Mk1. Thinking back I reckon the last time I spoke to him was in the cafe at the top of Olivers mount, had my GSXR then so must of been 88/89'ish.

Way too complicated & pricey for me. Not a fan of all the "rider-aid" stuff either.
Mind you, I don't think anyone can truly use more than about 100bhp on the road (not for more than a second or two once in a blue moon anyway) - I'd far prefer a bike with half the bhp & none of the nanny aids tbh.

Can anybody actually use even a good fraction of its potential on public roads though?

My BM is but 90hp tops, yet I've hardly ever wound it on full throttle.

I did it yesterday, downhill, 80mph, clear road for a mile, so I gave it max throttle in top gear, and it fairly leapt forward. I thought the clutch was slipping, the revs rose so quick, but I had hit 120 in just seconds and still going.... the slip stream blurred my vision, open face helmet, and by the time I whipped the throttle closed I found I was on the wrong side of the road.....

I shan't be doing that again, but imagine 200hp, not 90......

You can shut it all down I believe, even turn the ABS off as well but would be a bit too unwieldy for most.

They are too fast for me too personally.

I don't really like working on Ducatis for instance but their Pannigale V4 is a beautiful piece of engineering and style.

Kawasaki H2R with a Supercharger, easily north of 250hp with some tweeking.

BMW who weren't even in the Litre sports bike game until relatively recently.

Doubt many could wring these bikes necks on the road but still nice to own I suppose.

As one of the bike magazines mentioned back in the 90's, about sports bikes: "you just decide where you want to be on the road, open the throttle, and you're there almost immediately. They are that quick, brutal, blistering acceleration"

And that was 30 years ago....

Early American 'muscle cars' came with 250hp, and were regarded as being pretty swift, and they weighed in at 3000lbs.....

Yeh I started working on bikes when the FZR1000 EXUP and YZF750 were relatively new.

Not a computer in sight for servicing them, just good old fashioned tools!.

I had an FZR1000 for a while, it was a lovely smooth old lump and I think I preferred it to the R1 I had years later.
