An oppo of mine who I was on my apprenticeship with was a spannerman for Dean Ashton, who was a top privateer in BSB back in the 90's.There was one of those in my mates garage for MOT yesterday. Quite a trick looking beast, with a short titanium open 'silencer' on it. When it was fired up and left idling for a minute I put my hand over the exhaust, there was hardly anything coming out, and a sort of strangled mechanical rustling sound, whereas I expected a decent flow of hot air.
Apparently there is a huge cat slung underneath, which probably stifles several dozen potential horsepower. I'll bet a lot of those are quickly removed by speed freaks who feel they really need the full 220hp available....
He raced YZR Yamahas for a while, then switched to Ducati 916, with John Hackett tuned engines for 1996. He had the bike in the garages at HMS Collingwood, I gave him a hand a few weekends - push starting it with underseat exhaust I was nearly deafened and blown away by the noise out of the pipes
I guess comparing a road bike to a BSB bike isn't really fair though!

Used to buy huge 5 and 10l boxes of wine in French supermarkets on caravan holidays when you could bring back as much wine as you liked for personal consumption. Haven't been since 2019, guess brexit will have put a stop to that.
