18:35 now 5 yrs dry

its 18:35 and now 5 yrs to minute that ive been dry.
got told by dr 5 yrs ago that if i didnt give up drinking would be dead in 2yrs.
went home and poured all alcohol away looked at clock when id finished and it was 18:35.

started drinking heavy in army but by time dr spoke to me id cut down to 2-3 bottles of brandy a day.

whenever i was tempted in early days just looked at my youngest boy who was baby then and tempation vanished cos i knew i had to be there to see kids grow up.

Good on you.
My wife had a serious drink problem and it made me rethink my own drinking. Even now my wife CAN overdo it but at least now it's only very occasionally and then when on night out with her friends unlike the past when she'd down large quantities in secret every single day. At the same time I was suffering with migraines every week that lasted 3 days so a health scheme I was in at work paid for private consulation with a specialist. In trying to find out the trigger I had to do various things and stopping drinking for a couple of weeks was one of them.
This was 1988 and I haven't touched a drop, not even 1/2 pint since. Initially I weighed up the enjoyment of alcohol / getting slightly drunk with the guaranteed 3 days of migraine and that was enough but now I don't miss it one bit. I still can drink non alcoholic larger and bought myself 6 cans from Aldi for Xmas - first I'd had for ages (maybe 12 months) but have no intention of touching the real stuff again.

Slightly OT but before forced early retirement on health grounds I was a Civil Servant (as was my wife - we met at school and not work. We were both in H M Inspector of Taxes - now called HMRC). Drinking at lunch time was normal and in fact encourage by management as part of the policy at the time of people working together as a group so that included socialising as well. Friday afternoons you could guarantee quite a few staff were not functioning properly. Of course some people didn't restrict themselves to just Friday lunchtime and it was every day. A few even died due to the addiction. Never knew of anybody who was dismissed because of drink problems nor got done for drunk driving (most were sensible enough to come in on Friday by the bus - me included).

Good for you. Well done!!! Alcohol consumption and it's consequences is a serious issue in our society. If anything, it seems worse in the younger generation. Christmas for me was pretty much alcohol free - one third of a glass of wine towards the end of Xmas dinner, and I wished I hadn't touched it as the food tasted much better with just having water.

Well I'm going for the record gave up in 1980 after a family wedding/reception where I drank my usual 10-12 pints, the following morning I thought "is it worth it?" and haven't touched a drink since. Although I do sometimes miss Tartan/Export I discovered when I was at college.

Yeah that's my thing too unfortunately. Never been much of a drinker, but I DO like a smoke

Wow, just reading that fills my head with questions.

Cut down to 2-3 bottles of Brandy a day? How many were you drinking? How did you function?
I assume you weren't working?
How did you afford it? That has to be £150 a week habit.
How did you manage to produce a baby?

by time i left army lets just say breakfast was bottle of brandy and bacon sandwich.
i was working for myself when i came out
was making good money
and as its family friendly wont go in details how we produced baby


never had hang over, and it never seemed to affect my functioning could drink all night straight out on 5mile run then on ranges and get scores in the top 5.
