is garage away from house. if so how far .will cable be going undeground and then through the house back to mains . is there a spare way on consumer unit ? has it rcd protection .:work that out and we can give some idea of cost

If the garage is detached it's best to use SWA cable, if attached plastic conduit with T&E is acceptable.

2.5 flat twin and earth will be fine if your going outside. underground slip it in 20 mm plastic conduit at about 18 inch depth to garage saves making a joint with armoured cable .the rest we need to know db end ect

Yes SWA is armoured cable
Have you thought of going over the gap? suspending it off a catenary wire, Brightspark will probably know the minimum height (not got my regs here!)
it's a rented property so I'm trying to figure it all out before asking permission, there is power in there so if I'm lucky there may even be a tube i could feed cable through (v. unlikely , lol) in which case permission wouldn't be so important . You guys have been a font of useful info thankyou very much I'll come back when I've inspected it all a in more detail, cheers!

if theres power in there check what size cable that feeds it and what the fuse rating is. if its minimum is 2./5 mm your laughing

If needs be can you run an isolator c/w breaker possibly off a splitter block and run SWA via a catenary wire or scaffold tube etc out to the building and its consumer unit .
We had a 6 mm catenary wire out off the house consumer unit running over the ceiling void and out the eves to the consumer unit garage. The fuse was in place but no wire in it at the bungalow end .
I soon found out why... every time it rained the fuse blew because the insulation was UV damaged on the span . The catenary wire was also leaking live in foggy weather.
Mr Nearly had struck again and removed the earthings at each end.
It has now all been re done to the latest regs when the bungalow was rewired during the full refurbishment.. everything is now ducted underground in 3 inch ducts 1 x SWA & 2 x Cat 6 and U/G phone feeds , water and sewerage etc.

I had this done in the garage a little while back, i'll try to remember what the steps were. The original consumer unit was full so i bought an auxiliary one which holds a couple of trips and then a master on/off isolating switch. Also bought about 8 metres of armoured cable, some p-clips and a single commando socket (i've since replaced this with a double socket which aren't very cheap for what they are but seeing as i've got a compressor, mig, tig and now plasma it saves me a ton of faff). Parts cost about £90 iirc...
Then paid a qualified sparky to wire it in, that cost another £150 ish. Luckily for me the main 100A power feed from the road comes straight into the garage so he could take a link from it, saved some time. I'm not very electrically minded but i can take a photo of the whole arrangement if it would help

Hi guys yes photo would be interesting inch, I'm now contemplating a running a cable for 32amp, the spare trip says 20a but I think that's standard for a 13a supply, I can see a standard looking twin and earth cable in the house and an armoured going into the garage, I'll need to investigate further...I've set my sight on the possibility of an r-tech ac/dc tig and the 250a version runs on 32a. Which I'm fairly sure I'd have to run a cable solely for the purpose, the previous option was slightly glitched by the fact that the garage and utility run of same feed, washing machine /dishwasher/microwave. any thoughts, has anyone run a 32 supply to the garage?

if u have the spare 20 amp mcb up rate it to 30 amp take a 4.0 mm minimum 3 core swa cable out to a ceeflex 30 amp socket
