can I swap out the short mains lead fitted with a fused 13 amp plug and change it to a longer lead to make the unit more portable and change the plug to a blue commando type, this won't have a fuse but I have a blue socket in my workshop that's wired into the consumer unit with its own breaker, think it's 20 amp

Yes, in fact it will be an improvement as some 13A plugs on full load can get quite warm, so you must be losing some power. It might be an idea to increase the rating of the mains cable at the same time to reduce the voltage drop over the longer length.
