Hello,
Just this morning picked up a nearly new Clarke 130EN (for £100, good price?) ready for a welding project...ie the resto of my landrover discovery.
I usually borrow a big murex autolynx or a little esab stick for thick stuff, both of which are very good...but sadly arent mine and are needing during the day, as ive got a load of time off school due to finishing my exams I needed a welder that I could purchase relatively cheaply, and use during the days I couldnt borrow the others. So the Clarke came up locally and ive heard its not too bad...best way of putting it I think! I didnt have much to spend, but didnt want to buy anything too terrible, after playing about with it this morning, Its clearly not got the same power behind it as the murex and the weld puddle just isnt as stable, but its useable and hopefully the welds will be reasonably tidy.
Its currently setup gasless, and im actually happy to keep it this way: to keep costs down and im welding outside anyway. The weld puddle didnt seem as stable as the murex and you had to weld slower to keep a decent arc and neat weld.
My questions being: how can I get the best out of this welder (bearing budget in mind) and most important: what kind of setup would you expect for welding 1mm sheet steel. I was thinking "Min, setting 2" wire speed about "3"
Am I about right?
William
