12v electric motor troubles

I have a 12v electric motor on a hydraulic pump when it gets power it just clicks and doesn't start.

if I take the power off wait a few secs then put it too it again it clicks again.

any ideas what it could be? there is a capacitor on the side of the motor could it be done?

also it has not been going in quite some time might it be bound and could this stop it from starting?

Try removing the motor from the pump and then powering it up.

If "might it be bound" you mean siezed,I wouldn't think it likely,but the pump could be stuck through lack of use.
Check that motor and pump turn free by hand,the motor may run from a different position if there is a bad segment on the comutator.

I'd suspect brushes, especially if it's not been run for a while. They can get stuck.

sound I will strip it off the pump and give it a turn and see if that fixes it.

as above, whilst you have it off double check carbon brushes are making contact with armature end, and make sure the copper segments are clean and none missing.Are you sure its a capacitor, not a solenoid like a starter motor?

a capacitor sounds a little strange on a 12v hydraulic motor, you say it clicks most hydraulic pumps have relays on them does yours ? is so test it they click when opperated
