i personally infeed straight with carbide, hss i would use the compound. Mild steel is very variable in quality can be different within inches really noticeable with turning.
Cant help you with infeed depth it just happens , hood or pressbrake can probably answer that
yes I had differing quality in a three inch section.
I tried both ways and couldn’t really decide what was best. I have some en24 I might try threading that as it machines beautifully.
How are you guys feeding your insert in to the part. Via the cross slide straight in or the top slide with 30 degrees?
I didn’t get the greatest surface finish, although it is just mild steel.
As for speed as fast as mechanically sympathetic and backside will allow!
