Is there any advantage to smaller/larger inserts for threading?

I think the 16ER inserts will cover what I need to do 1.0mm to 2.5mm pitch?

same goes for internal threads. Is there any advantage between 11NR AND 16NR inserts?

The advantage with 11nr is the obvious one that you have a smaller tool holder to be able to do small internal threads, certainly wouldn’t bother with 11 external unless using a mini lathe.
I’ve got a cheapo bang good 11nr holder and tip for the once every ten years I need it
With my work I tend to use 22 and 27series.
New they’re expensive but on eBay they can be cheaper than the usual 16 series

Bigger inserts will be stronger and more expensive, but for internal it has to fit in the hole. In the ebay links forum I put link to 16ER and 16IR mixed packs 1mm-2mm pitch, which I think is much better than using general purpose AG60's, and they are close enough to do imperial threads too Choose a similar nose radius to the imperial thread.

For internal I bought an 11NL tool to thread in reverse away from chuck, but sods law no one sells the inserts (ag60 or specific) so I have a single ag60. I will save it for any time threading from a shoulder and use NR's for through threads.

I’ve gone with 16s first and a 20mm tool holder.

Gotta get some internal ones and a internal tool holder but they’re not the cheapest things.

Personally I would not buy cheap inserts or holders for threading, been there, done that, regretted deeply.

I’ve gone with a Korloy holder and inserts. no deals on at the minute unfortunately so I’m gonna hold fire on an internal setup till a deal does come on.

Cheap toolholders were hit or miss, had an external that was decent, had one that didn't even have a shim and was at the wrong angle/slant/whatever. Internal bars have lacked the rigidity and chattered like hell.
Inserts, well I had a job to do once, it was a prop shaft in F51 for a boat. It had a weird taper and thread and I didn't have an insert for that thread. Since it was a one off I decided to go for a cheap insert, reckoned I should get it made no problem from one corner and thus have the other two if I ever needed again, how wrong could I be, used all three corners and then had to buy a decent brand to get it finished. The cheap insert was an own brand insert, think it was Interstate from J and L, so probably just the cheapest of cheap junk.

May actually have just been 316 rather than F51 but either way the insert didn't last the course.

Threading is one area of turning I prefer not to compromise on if at all possible.

Not at the moment, they have a 3 for 2 offer on Vardex at the moment which makes them cheaper than Korloy but obviously Korloy cheaper when it is on offer.

MSC do plenty of HSS blanks but maybe with post it becomes expensive. Haven't bought HSS for a long long time, gave most of it away but kept a few bits for the just in case times.

The Korloy ones I’ve gone for are £8 a piece ones with a chip breaker. Vardex were about £14-15 a piece.
