110v die grinder speed control

Hello all,

Having bought an air powered die grinder and found the comp I have doesn't have enough puff, I bought a second hand electric Bosch one.
The tool comes as a 110v (yet to buy a transformer*), but I saw this thread and thought I'd do the same.

*The die grinder is rated at 500w - do I need to only find a tiddly transformer - I seen a 1.7Kvh, don't really understand what size I need to be honest!

Anyoohs: I thought It possible to splice a dimmer into the tools power lead _ Is it that simple?
Found an example, rated at 500w, Is this what I need?
link to TLC website Confused by the PDF saying 'not to be used for wire wound inductive loads', yet main page says only to be used for this purpose??

Hello Spot,

I don't see any contradiction, the table lists three different products, the V Plus you are looking at does say it can be used for wire wound inductive loads, the first column is a different product which can't.

I wouldn't go for a smaller 110V transformer, you never know what else you might want that is 110V once you have a transformer.

What threw me was I was looking at another product in the range which had 'iQ' in the name prior and was twice as dear; totally failed to see the 'VPlus' tag under the image to which I'd linked....sorry for that

Me again,

Put together my speed control device (500watt dimmer, 2 x 16amp plugs and a bit of flex and discarded back-box).

Seems to work perfectly: even has a 'soft start' function although when it came to marking up the varoius speed settings I'm struggling to find the easy solution.

I tried a carboard template of the cutting disk with a black line: filmed with DV cam (24fps), then tried to calulate the rpm from this - too dam fast.

So I bought a 'Digital Photo Tachometer' which claims a range of 2.5 to 99,999 RPM.
Now I don't know if the machine is cack; I'm missing something to do with AC transformer magic, or Makita is lying when they state the die-grinder runs at 27,000RPM.
Whether I run the grinder directly from the transformer, or through the dimmer, the machine reads a max RPM of 18,500'ish - what gives?

Wanting to use some 0.6 slit discs but I'm scared i'll slice my handsome good looks to shreds - If you think that that's worth saving have a heart and help me...please

Well the repair that required the die grinder was holding back the project so much I decided to crack on regardless - Started on a very low speed and increased in proportion to how hard I could clench my buttocks.
Happy to report that buttocks and handsome features are still in tack and working well!

I would like to understand the reason that the tool has a max speed of 18K opposed to the stated 27K upon the tool casing though.

To test my photo spinning rpm gizmo I racked my brains to think of a suitable calibration device: Record Player Turntable was dusted off and tested - gotta say the tool seems bang on'ish.
So this leaves the grinder, transformer/cable or dimmer to explain the power losses.

Saw this formula (110v/240v x max running speed of tool = 12.5Krpm) but doesn't return what my rpm reader reads *%"*"*! Think this is for running 240 tools from 110 really..
Tried to find the component spec of dimmer module (MK K24301) to see if it is Triac or Diode based with no luck - had a thought the the electronics could be limiting the max current.
I have only used a nominal amount of cable - looks like 6mm? - so no huge losses there...
That leaves me wondering if the transformer, a Draper 3.3K, is a factor: But surely it is unreasonable to expect a 110v tool to lose 900rpm once connected to said trans...

Can anyone see any contradictions or failings on my part to understand the blindingly obvious?
