Looks very even. I wonder if it has the wrong screw?

I have another 36 and compared the screw and they are same less the wear on the collar. It really is a mystery to how the damage has occurred as even the handle is straight and no other signs of wear

Barnsley. I do work not too far from you, some days, but they have us tracked to the hilt at work, & I don't have transport of my own, nowadays.

Vice quick release mechanisms require the screw and nut threads to be engaged before the turning of the handle results in jaw movement. Butting the jaw up to the workpiece will mean this only happens occasionally, and how often this happens will be dependent on thread profile. It could take up to a nearly whole turn of the handle, before the threads engage.

That's exactly what it's doing so I guess it's working as normal .
How you have described it is exactly how it operates so all good thanks for that .
