When I worked in the rig yards up to 3mm was a metal workers job , anything over was a platers job, there was a demarcation line set in place about it.

Id grind that out, looks like youve got insufficient gas there

I'll be grinding it off anyway it's only a bench top so not holding up a building or anything major

you might find it doesnt have much penetration the bead might be most of the strength, grinding it down flat might make things bend when you lug that onto your bench

I would suggest using 1mm wire as this carries current better than 0.8 wire.

Mm, much to be said for 0.8 wire on a smaller set. It normally dives a bit deeper

I'm no expert but I wouldn't even attempt joining plates together if I wanted a flat surface.

Have to agree that you will struggle to get a flat surface after all the welding and grinding, but definitely grind that weld out. When you get better at welding it'll bug the heck out of you knowing it's there. You could always weld straps on angle to both plates to try to keep it flat whilst you are welding.

all done, ground it all back, got a tiny amount of delfection about 3-4mm but its more than good enough as a work bench thanks for everyones help, i can get making things and use some proper advise

That 3 or 4mm will bug you my friend, checked my bench the other day and it was probably half mm, still try to get over that!

Breezey If you looking to fabricate any sort of framework etc grind it out and start over again, trust me on this one, if you're adamant on welding the plates together then look at trying to brace them out, maybe alternate stitch welds from front and back aswell.

haha youre probably right, however this is only a temporary permenant bench until ive built a full set of cabinets

True, ive got a nice flat section just the back that is deflected a tiny amount, only temporary really.

wanted to weld it for practice more than anything, not done anything this thick before. ive ground it all back, i did some long tacs on both sides first before welding but wasnt quite enough, live and learn.
