hi there, i have recently aquired the welder in the title for my son to learn to weldm however, it seems the thermal overload is kaput as there is an orange light on the power switch. having read a few posts o here it sems this is quite a common fault with the pcb. can anyone tell me how to check wheter it is the pcb and if so, where can i get a replacement .

To start with confusion - is it an old one? On the early models the light on the switch was a sign that the thing was switched on rather than an overload warning.

What happens when you switch on and then try to weld?

absolutely nothing apart from the fan working. the switch itself is green but the light on is orange/yellow.

The thermal cutout is mounted to the rectifier assembly. It will be a cylindrical device with ears to bolt it to the plates.

It may also be inside the transformer on some welders. Post some picts of the inside and we can point it out.

hi Gents, its been a while since i have been on here, and i'm still no further forward with the clarke. there was a charred patch on the pcb and after taking advice i replaced it with a new one from weldequip, however there is still nothing happening except the fan is spinning. i have taken some pics of the inside as requested so hopefully one of you tech gurus will be able to point me in the right direction. thuis welder is in really good condition and i don't want to just throw it in a skip and replace it.

Looks like the thermal cutout is in the transformer. Should be two small wires.

Might be the blue-covered wire with the connector above the rectifier assembly heatsink. If you unplug it you should read a short accross the wires going to the transformer.

Looks like Shenion's hit the nail on the head. If that is indeed the thermal cutout you can temporarily bridge it to see if it spurs the machine into life.
Don't be tempted to run it without it for any length of time though, you'll probably kill it.

thanks guys, would i be right in saying you are ion about the 2 wires with the blue circle in the middle that are joined to the 2 aliminium plates?

No, the ones I've circled, trace them down and see if they disappear into the transformer.

thanks woz, i traced them down and yes they dissapear into the transformer. i disconnected the plug and still no difference, i bridged the terminals on the socket end and still nothing. i'm running out of patience with it now. is there anywhere that will repair it for me?

Weldequip can possibly source you a new PCB or you may be able to get it repaired, try a PM to forum member Ashley Tinker, he repairs them.
