Results where impressive however, Same technique just scaled up erm quite a lot

They don’t normally use them manually. They use a counter weighted or sprung frame.

Used to be used for armour plating. Now only really used for Mould and Die repair.

Reminds me of a great old boy that used to pop in work occasionally, used to tell us about the 1000amp Lincoln stick set he used during the war.
No matter how many times he'd told the story, it was always fun listening to him.

I had one in my office for years but I loaned it someone who was doing a lecture...historical stuff....and never got it back....I also had some of the first flux "cored" wire with the flux on the outside....and loads of other stuff...Admiralty Test Data for the first welded wardhips etc etc.....never got it back and lost touch with the guy I loaned it to....who will be a grand old age now..
Ive still got some old books from BOC that they published in the 50s and 60s and other bits and bobs

I like stuff like that. Got a few bits off old ships I sailed on. Stuff that was made way back when, no interest to anyone but just curiosity stuff I think you’d call it. My wife calls it crap!

learnt the hard way years ago about loaning stuff out. Don’t do it now.

I decided to have a quick look what I had and a book called "hardfacing by Welding" popped out at me....in the back was a list of all the UK firms making hardfacing (and probably other) rods at the time (stick electrodes)....there were 21 and that was in 1948......now there are none or maybe 1 who makes a few now and again.

Since many of us would like to have a giant stick electrode why don't use a piece of round stock and cover it with I don't know concrete and then apply the signature 7018-H4R ?

We used to make 10mm Stainless Steel....a dissimilar hybrid, something like 308LMo.....they were used for welding Centurion or was it Chieftain tanks at ROF Barnbow in Leeds........and the ROF in Newcastle....they were made to a MOD specification which was based on the chemistry of the core wire.....which can be different to the deposit chemistry.......but try as we might we couldnt get them to change, 309L would have been better for everyone.

Isn’t that what some of the Chinese companies do.
