i have bought a few sets of forge steel hex sockets and allen key sockets for jobs over the last 5 years. I use them for jobs i dont want to hammer a snap on socket to death or cut them up for specials etc. I can honestly say i havent had one fail yet, they have had some real abuse - especially the larger sizes of 1/2" drive allen key sockets 17 & 19mm on hydraulic sae flanges up to 500Nm.

never tried silverline so cant really comment on a comparison.

I like to have a few cheap sockets, spanners, Allen keys etc about that I don't mind butchering for one off jobs, you wouldn't want to weld your best onto a bit of bar or grind down to fit in a tight spot

Well I went and got mine today and tbh there not too bad but as I said Mine are for butchering for one off jobs, I don't think they stand up to a load of abuse

Butchering is my interest. I've a small container of sockets for this (though too many are old Gedore ) but it doesn't contain enough sockets or sizes and is slowly depleting. Sometimes being able to weld a socket to something is the best way of doing a job but it's not something to do with the Snap-on gear!

I find 1/4 " only need to be cheap as there's never enough torque involved to need high spec sockets.
