re: the threaded bottoms, I was going with a nut welded to plate as the nut has deeper thread than the 5mm plate I'll be using on the bottom. I'm working on the principal the more is betterer when it comes to thread strength, what did you do?

Yes I'd need to be able to lock off the height adjustment, I'm assuming a nut backed up to the base of the leg but open to suggestions.
