Apparently, UK usage is "cotter" means a wedge or tapered pin. US "cotter" is a split pin.

It seems that there *isn't* an agreed definition, then
There are some things which are definitely bolts. Some which are definitely screws.
But a far larger selection which could be described by either name.
I do like the definition I gave in the original post though.

This is why I'm clearing no.3 shed.
My "workshop" is just slightly too narrow (at 9ft) to use a table saw, so every time I want to do a job, I have to pile stuff up to make room - which then becomes the pile I have to move next time.

Print out, stick on, then electro-etch with a 9v battery, cotton wool, and salt/vinegar solution.
