Really really appreciate the help, couldn't have done this without the forum. Quick additional question, what are the colours for the tungsten electrodes? Blue, green... Best for general use. Also, do I need different filler rods for different metal, I would assume you do?
Ordered this today, that can't be my tracking number?
Ah, it is, but with numbers blanked out. Shipped today
Anyway
I ordered arc electrodes, to use as tig am I right in thinking I need gas, a regulator and tungsten electrodes?
Hi, sorry to bring this up again, the welder from weldes is shipped from Poland which I didn't realise and there is a two week delivery, which is quite close to Christmas, just searching on eBay, there was this, has warranty, HF ignition, etc, no pulse, worth looking at...
Great, yes we have a couple of pairs of thick leather gauntlets for casting. The helmets look great with the designs on. I'll for the automatically darkening ones...
Cool, I think I'll go with that one, money better spent on something that has more longevity. He casts brass, copper, aluminium etc and is always experimenting, so this will have future versatility.
To get him going at Christmas, for stick welding, what would be the best size electrode? To make...
Ok, I know I'm looking at budget, but I found one that has HF start for 169 on Amazon, a Rhor, 12months warranty, UK plug, comes with torch etc...
May be worth a go?

Thanks for the help again. So the cost gradually starts to go up ...
I think I could handle lift arc ignition but I'm struggling to find a welder. As you say, scratch seems like a bit of a faff. If I can keep it under £200 with the torch that would ok I think. And if it isntnworthbit I'll for a...
Actually, Parker do one for 29, with some bits and pieces, think I just need some tungsten electrodes and gas after I've got that...

Yes ok, it's looking like most of these you have to buy the tig torch separately... Maybe an arc/TIG welder and buy the torch in the future... Torch seems to be around £40-50
This has both arc and tig and a spare helmet (which doesn't look great but may be fine just for a second pair of eyes). If get him the stuff just to try with arc over Christmas and then give tig a go later...
Wow thanks for all the advice. Very useful.
Ok, to summarise my thoughts..I've had a look at videos of arc and tig welding. I know it's a learnt skill, and I appreciate that, but I think he will pick up at least Arc. I'm very practical myself so I'm looking at tig and fancy a go. We are...
Hi
I'm looking to get my son a welder for Christmas. He is into metals, has a furnace and casts so this is the next step. I would use it too. I don't want anything expensive but want to make steel garden sculptures , decorative stuff etc. I know he will want to try stuff other than steel...
