The postage fee charge came in because a lot of bulk sellers (mainly China) were taking the phiss by selling things at 1p + £3 (or whatever) postage. And don’t forget the fee for accepting PayPal too!
I switched to oxy/propane from acetylene. I Just got a hose suitable for propane + regulator and use the original torch and nozzles (BOC kit), they work for what I need (bit of brazing & heating) but probably not as good as dedicated propane nozzles.
Hi folks, I need to buy some rods to weld up some 16mm sq bars to 40x5mm flat plate (eg railings). The steel is s275 so I think a general purpose e6013 will do fine but I’m not sure what diameter to go for - maybe 4mm?? they will only be used for this job so I want to get the most suitable.
Any...
Sounds like a great project! I have a wood lathe and experience from that leads me to suggest that you build in some way to add mass e.g. a strong tray that you can fill with concrete. Even small-ish bits of wood cause a lot of vibration until they have been rough turned.
I bolted my lathe to...
I went cheap and made my own from an old metal bin (pre wheely bin type), plywood lid with 4” spigot in the middle to the extractor. Inlet was via 4” pipe glued into the lid near the edge at about 30deg angle.
It had a butchered traffic cone under the spigot to replicate the tapered cone seen in...
Here is my 2023 running total so far.
System is Solar Edge - 7.2Kw of south facing panels with a 10Kwh battery.
Peak output was 8kw for a couple of mins (only saw it once - bright clear sky, cool air). But during spring/summer peak output is usually between 5&6Kw.
The data is quite clear but you...
We have a Baxi platinum, about 15 years old now, it’s fan was replaced (went noisy) and I’ve done the heat exchanger a couple of times, stainless but it still gets blocked eventually - an easy diy fix and only £40 (now got a magnetic filter so maybe that will help), otherwise it just works :D
Thought I’d show a pic of our UFH manifold which supplies our kitchen, maybe it will help with working out what direction to take with your system.
The rest of our system is conventional two zones (upstairs & downstairs) on separate thermostats and zone valves.
Kitchen UFH was added later and...
The main thing with the high efficiency bearings is the lower drag compared to the cheapos, added to low drag toe setting, correct chain alignment etc. etc. all adds up to a bit more speed on the straights. It’s only a bit but a nose in front wins the corner :-)
Re the 6003 bearings, we used these :- 6003-2Z/C3 SKF Energy Efficient Shielded
Super low drag and they lasted a whole season, only wish they did them in the size needed for the rear as well.
If you end up welding a strip (rather than getting a piece of tube) you may want to consider a slash joint (scarf??), that way you won’t get a clonk clonk clonk at the joint.
A previous customer who likes what I make asked to make another sculpture for his wife. The design brief was “a horse” (I like a loose specification, lots of scope for randomness). I think they like it as they’ve ordered “a dragon”. For next year.
So here it is with the requisite mug shot. :-
New stuff is always rubbish until the selling companies get their act together.
Sounds like there is a need for a car charging aggregator app, a bit like “Just Eat”.
+1 for FH Brundle, I get most of my sculpture metal from them, also have a look at their fancy bar as an add on purchase, embossed with a tree bark sort of texture - great for flower stems :-)
I avoid the galvanised / plated stuff, apart from the health issues it makes a mess, if I have to use...
