no gaps is crucial as if you have a gap it will quickly try to open up on you,

I read somewhere that ballscrews on a manual mill are not such a good thing as they are so smooth that unless you have really good table and saddle locks they tend to turn under cutting pressure

I sold my Bridgeport I restored and have just bought a 1999 xyz DPM 3 axis bed mill for my new welding and fabrication business
It was filthy when I picked it up, think it had all 20 years of chips...
As said just take the leadscrew and feedshaft out and the forward/reverse shaft and then unbolt the gearbox and have a look, they are pretty straightforward inside

I have the jd2 model 32 which I e had for a few years and I just recently bought the hydraulic upgrade kit from Stakesy’s which means I no longer have to have it bolted down, and the bending is easy, expensive but a nice upgrade
