If you have a compressor with a 50l ish tank then a little plasma cutter is a useful tool. Especially for some of these seam welded moments. Also for getting through hard to get at plugvweldsThey can be welded back later.
My cheap little plasma cutter has paid for itself many times over on my...
Time to make some more progress on the car. A quick mock up to make sure it will go back together.
Doors are opening and closing nicely now and clearing the rebate on the front wing. Bonnet and wing lines not looking too bad. Onwards.....
Hi Dragnet You can cut the rear quarter out just enough to get at the sill for now
If the rear quarter is in good condition you can neatly cut it then put it back. If you use a thin cutting blade.
I have found with MGB's and Midget that building the sill on the bench works well. as you are then...
Hi Dragnet
A lovely project. Will watch with interest.
To help keep cost down gather a few spares in advanced of needing them. It means you can buy at car shows or from Auction sites at better prices at your leisure.
I have bought wings and cross members etc when the opportunity presented.
Some...
I found a few pictures to show how bad thin metal can be when I seamed a rear wing top as a test
I have accepted these days that the first run of welds might not be the last.
Weld, flapper disc, weld, flapper disc and so on. Always letting the panel cool. This strengthens the metal where I'm...
Hi Dan
Don't lose heart when you blow through on thin bodywork it's pretty normal.
If you are blowing through put your mig on a low setting and place a couple of high tacks that may not be penetrating very well.
You can do this to either side of the join and across so they connect as they will...
Thank you.
My kids grew up with car repair panel shaped holes in their cereal boxes.
I think making templates and practicing with cardboard is proving key to learning for me.

Repaired the inner panel behind the passenger side. The hole had been cut for speakers which took strength out of the door post. You could flex it.
This and the window repair are upholstered. When things are put back
I have started using weld through primer before I dress the welds. It shows up...
A quick repair of the passenger side rear window.
Decided today to seem weld the sills where they meet the rear wing panel. Also where the front wing fits to the Sill.
The MG LE50 is done this way to stop some of the water traps. Watching a video of the body shell construction they used lead...
I use a portamig 186s
Its a wonderful piece of kit. The feed is brillant.
I run it on a 16amp plug.
I have owned it for a couple of years now and it's been very reliable. Same stable as the Oxford.
There was a long lead time but worth the wait.
Lovely welds
Might be late for this reply.
I started my mg build with a cebora 130.
Loved it. Nice and portable and decent feed.
I now have a portamig 186s which goes down to nice low amps for when the metal gets thin.
The cebora torch was very responsive to short bursts for thin metal. It was a...
After a hard day at work what better way to relax than bending metal in a vice.
My mig gas is almost out again so to use the last breaths of it I decided to repair the inner rear wing thingy where someone had cut it for speakers.
Cunningly I made enough for both sides. I will fit this Tommorow...
