...forgotten about when posh/insanely spendy tungsten grinders became the 'must have' accessory? [/tongue in cheek]
FWIW chemsharp/tungstensharpening powder is just sodium nitrite, commonly/cheaply available as it's used for all sorts of stuff including food preservatives despite being fairly...
Hi Im new to the forum but noticed this post and seen than no one had mentioned tungstensharpening powder, simply heat up the tungsten to red hot and dip into the powder and, with a bit of practice, you can get pin point sharp tungstens with no grind marks. I can supply a link but not sure of...
Thanks Richard, I'm still yet to have a proper play with it to be honest, working nights isn't conducive to grinding etc. In the garden! I've had a few 1.6 lanthanated and Ceriated sitting around for a while which I finally got around to sharpening, the only thing holding me back now is finding...
These are just practice off cuts, i have the rails and feet made all drilled etc to be welded up. I have some 4x2x1 hardwood blocks to block out inside, will be bolted through.
I spend more time sharpeningtungsten lol, more picky on that than welding lol. I will get closer then, i need to try...
Ok something thinner. A scrap piece of 1.2mm, about 6" long.
And then 2 stanley blades together, slightly overlapped on the chamfered thin (sharp) side. Struugled to get the arc focused but kept sharpening the tungsten (1.6mm) then used some scotch on it, and suprisingly enough, it worked.
...off bench/out of position trickier
AC machine can obviously do ali (but so can MIG in some cases if pushed)
needs some method of tungstensharpening
often lots of set up and prep time compared to actual welding
makes you look good to the uninitiated
can spend more time chasing the youtube...
I have the Parkside version of that sharpener and it does indeed work very well for sharpeningtungstens. Unfortunately the diamond coated wheels are not up to the job, mine has lost a lot of the diamonds after maybe grinding 10 tungstens! I'm now back to using the bench grinder, I've a new...
I have tungsten grinder which screws onto a Dremel tool, and wouldnt want to go back to using a bench grinder. When I did use a bench grinder though, had a diamond disc intended for angle grinder, and simply turned up adapter to make it fit bench grinder properly. Much better than a grinding...
im crap at sharpening them on a bench grinder.
but the title of this thread has just reminded me.....
i need to get some 1.6mm drill bits to clean out the adaptor on the tungsten grinder adaptor.
thanks for reminding me :)
off to the bay to find some...
Ive been searching and yes its been covered a thousand times.
Im trying to refine my TIG welding, so figured that i should spend a bit more effort on making sure my tungstens are better than they are at present.
Im using a bench grinder, but am looking for a better wheel to put in it, i cant...
After an 11 year absence from tig welding I laid my first beads today!:D
I managed to cobble together a working torch with stuff donated by Tom Morrow and what I had. I used a 1.6 tungsten (which I got very good at sharpening), a no 7 cup & gas flow was 6 l/m. Steel was cleaned up using a...
Been practising a bit more, speed of torch and rod filling seem to be the problem although I've sussed the business of the tungsten sticking when starting the arc.
On the plus side, I've become quite expert at sharpeningtungstens........ :D
The stone will grove in time but it doesnt matter, you can still sharpen in the groove before it is too deep and flattening is necessary. The wheel is wide enough to accomodate 3 groves at least so you won't use up space that fast, seems you have quite a lot of sharpening. If you are going to...
You are quite correct. We do have Tungsten Grinders with a fluid waste chamber. This is because of the small amount of Radiation emitted when 2% Thoriated are sharpened.Health and Safety issue
Ok mTe I will order one of those now... I always try to set my torch up as very best I can, the tip of the electrode is always set as short as I can get away with but obv with angles etc I then have to set it to get into the angle! As soon as that's done I revert back.. I normally grind a sharpe...
All advice taken on board chaps! much appreciated.
Spent about an hour in the garage tonight just laying beads. although i spent about 45 minutes of that grinding back the bloody tungsten! I appear to be struggling to get "Comfy" as you will see with the pictures below - weld starts off nice...
