so, my steel filler rod and pack of consumables arrived today so had an hour having a proper go at figuring it out.
ran 2 beads on some ally to just check the AC side of things, that works fine. no idea what grade ally it is, just sold as 'raw aluminium' in B&Q. second bead cracked right...
Check your percentage fir start up amps, I've never had wandering arc with my magic wave, tungsten sharp? No splits, are you sharpening the tungsten right, have you tried a new tungsten
...which is real only in my head,as it's not build yet.
Then I went few miles far from home to collect this bit of kit
A neutra tungstensharpening machine.
Complete of accessories into a box.
But I think it misses a kind of depth gauge for the tungsten holder.
It has a Lafert motor...
I would be tempted to put a small point on the tungsten, to help throw the HF out from the point,
As for low amps tig also having this issue, are you sharpening with the grinding wheel grinding towards the point rather than across, the grain heading down the point also helps throw the HF from...
...internal shielding and in AC current .
Think about that...
I've bought a bench grinder on yesterday.
The seller proposed me a tungstensharpening machine ,complete of everything even coolants bottles for 50 euros,we agreed that next month I come back to buy it .
I don't have any Tig welder...

I currently use a bench grinder for sharpeningtungsten’s but find the wheel can wear significantly but this can affect tungsten angle. Can anyone suggest a different piece of equipment apart from grinder.?
The colouring on the red arose during use, i.e. it was shiny before I used it.
I too thought that Lanthanated were good for greater currents than my machine can deliver. I'd try them in another machine but my nearest is in Suffolk!
I'm a TIG newbie myself but just to point out, that blueing of the tungsten could also be from overheating during sharpening?, i've done it myself on the belt grinder.
I'm also using lanthanated tungstens and you should easily be able to do over 200A on a 2.4mm!
I have a combined belt and disc sander, I've never used the disc part just the belt
It's nothing special, cheap Chinese jobbie that is available in a variety of colours depending on whos badge goes on it
I bought it off a forum member who had a shed fire so the switch was a little crisp...
I use an angle grinder to remove the bulk, then sharpen on a belt sander (one of those Aldi ones) - the tilting table makes it easier for me to hold consistent angles.
If it's for something 'special', I'll hone the edge with a little diamond pad.
If it's just for general turning, I use inserts...
Does anyone use an angle grinder to shape/sharpen hss tool bits
