Unlike steel welding ali generally creates a bigger weld pool,
Try sharpening the tungsten but with only a small blunt on the end,
Turn the frequency up a lot higher while pratising and that'll give a smaller pool.
Once you do enough you'll gradually find settings that work for each...

Diamond wheels for tungstensharpening
Stainless steel brush
Remember that you can TIG with MIG wire - if you need thicker twist 2 or three lengths with a drill.
...of sharpened tungstens for him though.
TIG is particular about cleanliness so I've got scotchbrite pads, acetone, stainless brushes and diamond wheels for tungstensharpening.
I like TIG as most of the work we do is repair of very small parts and the slowness of TIG makes this much easier.
Haha! Will work with a drill and a flappy in the grinder. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TIG-TUNGSTEN-SHARPENING-PASTE-/220388296377
I would seriously consider the sharpening paste.
If you ever break a torch dont throw it away remove all the rubber and save the boss, then with some consumables you can make a tungsten holder for sharpening that way you can slways keep the same point regardless of it its a full tungsten or 20mm long
My thinking is that this tip is aimed more at beginners who are more likely to have 'proper' touch downs/regularly feed 1/2" worth of wire into the tungsten etc than as general advice. From the health 'n safety nazis POV i'm thinking sharpening both ends is more dangerous when, err, sharpening...
I have just read following tip for TIG welding:
"Never grind both ends of the tungsten."
Well, I do it always. I use 1.6 mm and 2.4 mm, "2% La" tungsten. I cannot mix or make a mess with different types or diameters. So, by having always 10 pointed tungsten at both sides, I do not waste...
Anyone else out there use an upside down angle grinder to sharpen tungstens, i find it gives better results than the pedestal grinder because the score lines go with the direction of the tip and you tend to have a grinder out anaway when welding, dont need to keep going to the pedestal grinder...
About 8 seconds on the first sharpening.
You can sharpen one tungsten hundreds of times though. It's if you don't hang the torch up carefully or drop it that it snaps them. They're not expensive anyway.
Watch some through the lens videos on here and on youtube and you will see what you are supposed to do but it's easy to touch gown with the tungsten or catch the rod with it and you will be scratch starting which is an art as well so get used to sharpeningtungstens if you try it.

I guess you've already worked out you'll need:
- Bench grinder for tungstensharpening
- Mask (Auto dimming £40 job has done me fine)
- Rods suited to the material and thickness of material. I went 1.6mm mild steel and same in aluminium...
Thanks for the (super quick replies) guys :)
That's the thing, that has stopped me from making a purchase. I don't have a lathe, and (at the moment) I can't see me using it for sharpening as I don't have a lot that needs sharpening. Just depends what else you can do with them really...
For cleaning saw cut ends up I use a angle grinder with a fibre sanding disc. As I only use my bench grinders for fringing and sharpening tools such as: lathe tools, drill bits, tig tungsten etc In order to keep the wheel faces as flat as possible.
Using a green stone to grind tungstens is a waste of a stone, an ordinary fine grey alox wheel is all you need, sharpening on an emery band is also a perfectly fine way of doing it, in fact when I was taught many years ago it was the preferred method, and if asked the question in an exam was the...
atm i have a dan lacey frame, subrossa bars and forks, purple proper front and back wheels, s and m stem, mcneil cranks etc etc ahha hardly ride now! i cant tig and do have my own set!
anyways back on topic! any one know if i can use a diamond impregnated grinding wheel to sharpen these...
i would asssume a grinding wheel would be adequate? otherwise my dad also has tool grinders etc which i guess he could make me a jig up for to get the same everytime :P
what do you guys use to sharpen them? will i have to be carefull not to get it too hot while grinding down?
as for the...
I ordered 2.5 box through work. I should know better to check the size when I got it, rather than just to assume. I should have spotted it really :ashamed: but anyhoo... I am feeling confident that I will be able to produce some half decent results with 2mm plate. Lets hope I havn't tempted fate...
I'm amazed you even got a weldpool on 4mm ally with 45A (i assumed it'd be much thinner as you'd typically weld 1.5mm ally at around 65-80A AC). How long did you have to wait for a puddle? Minutes? How wide is the bead?
Bigger tungsten generally = less stable arc everything else being equal...
