Hi All,
As a complete novice in the welding area, and having a Jaguar XJ Coupe restoration project to get moving on, I decided to get a MIG welder to practice with through the winter months. I went out and bought a couple of 5kg reels of welding wire from the local Machine Mart ready to start laying down my first welds. I unwrapped the plastic from the reel and started to place it on the spool holder, thats when it all started to go down hill. The wire on the reel proceeded to uncoil itself at an alarming rate, and I ended up with about 25 meters of wire sprung out around my shed.
So my advice to anyone not already familiar with welding wire is to keep a tight grip on the wire until it's safely installed in the welding machine.
Hope it helps somebody in the future.
JV.
