ESAB have added a specialist range of welding rods to their product range. Named "FeMAG" they have been specially developed for positional welding in awkward places and for use by less-skilled operators.
The unique feature of these electrodes is that they are magnetic, which means that the molten weld pool stays in place on vertical and overhead welds rather than just dropping off.
They are coated with a specially formulated magnetic flux. This flux comes in two variants, north and south and packs of rods are supplied in pairs, one north and one south, which must be kept together with a steel keeper across the ends of the boxes to maintain shelf-life.
Consider welding inside a pipe, the north rods are used for the clockwise run (in the northern hemisphere) until the top of the pipe is reached and then a south rod is used to complete the weld back down to the bottom.
Oil companies should find these rods attractive because they have a lot of pipes.
